(Asiad) New face emerges as S. Korea fails to match 2023 success

The South Korean swimming team arrived in Tokyo for the Asian Games with the intention of repeating their remarkable performance from the 2023 Hangzhou Asiad. However, they departed the city with a diminished medal haul compared to their previous success. At the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, the team claimed a total of 20 medals over six days, consisting of one gold, six silver, and 13 bronze.

Despite the lower medal count, the South Korean delegation witnessed the emergence of a promising new star in swimming. The 20-year-old Kim Young-beom has quickly become the face of the future for South Korean aquatic athletes. Kim opened his competitive journey with a silver medal in the men's 100m freestyle, showcasing exceptional speed and technique. He managed to lead the world record holder, Pan Zhanle, down the stretch before allowing the Chinese swimmer to beat him by a fraction of a second.

While Kim Young-beom has captured the attention of fans and analysts alike, the legacy of the two "freestyle alpha dogs" from the 2023 Hangzhou Asiad remains undeniable. Kim Woo-min and Hwang Sun-woo led the charge in 2023, combining to win gold in the men's 4x200-meter freestyle relay. Kim Woo-min also claimed gold in the men's 400m and 800m freestyle events, while Hwang Sun-woo secured victory in the 200m freestyle.

These two swimmers dominated the pool, contributing a total of six gold medals to South Korea's medal tally at the 2023 Asiad.
