Anthropic: The Situation Report

In Butembo, eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, a community health worker records fevers, recoveries, and deaths on paper and shares her notes with a zone manager via WhatsApp. This data becomes crucial for predicting Ebola's spread and where to deploy aid. A rare strain of Ebola, Bundibugyo (BDBV), is currently ravaging the region and has no approved vaccine.

Teams on the ground conduct door-to-door visits, documenting the journey of infected individuals to offer timely care. However, compiling this information into situation reports (sitreps) is laborious, often leading to delays in response efforts. Anthropic and its AI tool, Claude, are now assisting by automating report creation, allowing teams to generate sitreps in under an hour instead of all day.

Meanwhile, AI is also aiding in disease modeling and forecasting, helping to optimize the allocation of treatment centers. Though there is currently no BDBV vaccine, CEPI is supporting research into potential vaccines and using Claude to track and expedite vaccine development efforts.
