Zverev, Agassi defend 'spectacular' Laver Cup

Grand Slam champion Alexander Zverev and American legend Andre Agassi spearheaded a strong defense of the Laver Cup ahead of its latest edition in London this week. The exhibition, taking place at the O2 Arena from Friday to Sunday, features top players like Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Rafael Jodar, and Jakub Mensik. The Laver Cup, a three-day hard court tournament, pits European players against the rest of the world, a unique team event in a sport dominated by singles competition.

Although the Davis Cup is the premier team competition, the Laver Cup was created in 2017 by Roger Federer and Tennis Australia to emulate the drama of the Ryder Cup. Despite the event's lack of widespread public appeal, Zverev and Agassi, who serves as Team World's captain, are passionate about the Laver Cup. Agassi, an eight-time Grand Slam champion, emphasized the excitement and intensity surrounding the event, stating that players are driven by the competition and desire to impress each other.

Zverev, who could have opted out after winning the US Open, highlighted his loyalty to the event, which has supported him in the past. He expressed his enjoyment of being among team-mates and his hope for a great week. British player Arthur Fery, an alternate for Team Europe, is also participating in the event, marking a milestone in his rapid rise to prominence.
