Wie weiter nach der Wahl?: CDU lehnt SPD-Einladung in Sachsen-Anhalt ab

In Saxony-Anhalt, the state's CDU has declined an invitation from the SPD to discuss forming a government after the recent Landtag election. A CDU spokesperson confirmed that the state administration has decided to join the opposition. They remain committed to this stance, stating that it is firm.

Following this decision, a government formation in Saxony-Anhalt without the AfD seems unlikely. The CDU, the Left, the Greens, and the SPD together hold 39 seats, with the BSW (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) representing 5 members. The AfD also has 39 seats. To form a majority in the parliament, 42 votes are required.

The SPD had intended to discuss this matter with the CDU, the Greens, the Left, and the BSW on the following Tuesday. In a letter, SPD state leaders Juliane Kleemann and Andreas Schmidt urged these parties to seriously consider the existing options for forming a stable and capable government.

The SPD had previously advocated for a coalition government with the AfD, which they now reject. The BSW, on the other hand, has consistently supported the idea of an overparty Minister-President, showing openness to changing majorities. The discussion will focus on the contents that an AfD-led minority government would need to implement.

The BSW had expressed willingness to consider the proposal of selecting an overparty Minister-President during earlier negotiations. However, it remains unclear if the meeting will proceed without the CDU in Magdeburg.
