Why Green Bay IS a Top 10 Logistics City

Green Bay, Wisconsin is renowned for its football, but Brian Figueroa, Managing Director of Transportation at KBX Logistics, highlights the city's significance in logistics and transportation. Despite having just 1/10 of 1% of the US population, Green Bay accounts for more than 1% of all national transportation roles. Brian chairs the Greater Green Bay Chamber's Transportation and Logistics Task Force, which has focused on marketing the region's freight identity and building a talent pipeline through local universities.

The freight market in Green Bay began shifting in early Q1, driven primarily by supply-side factors such as regulatory enforcement of non-domicile CDL rules, cabotage, English proficiency requirements, and the impact of the Iran fuel cost conflict. These changes have been relatively stable for 3.5 to 4 years, making the current transition particularly jarring for businesses that have not experienced a carrier-favorable market.

A key observation from KBX's carrier partners is that small carriers, operating five trucks or fewer, are becoming less willing to drive empty miles as fuel costs rise and margins tighten. To respond, KBX has utilized its dense facility network to improve carrier utilization, offering head- and backhaul solutions tied to Georgia-Pacific and other Koch businesses. The current market trend indicates a move towards equilibrium rather than a sudden reversal.

KBX is currently seeing strong growth in data centers, driven by Koch subsidiaries Molex and Georgia-Pacific Building Products, which supply materials for these capital infrastructure projects. Additionally, paper and consumer products generate steady truckload volume annually, as they are considered recession-resilient and tied to population and GDP growth. However, the building products segment for housing-related construction faces pressure due to weakness in that sector.

Payments in the industry are becoming more digitally accurate through real-time EDI, which enables faster carrier payments. This is particularly beneficial for small carriers managing tight cash flow on two-week payroll cycles. Green Bay's concentration of over 640 transportation, logistics, and shipping companies in the metro area makes it a critical supply chain hub, comparable to better-known freight hubs like Chattanooga and Chicago.
