Gautam Gambhir's relationship with Rohit Sharma began long before they worked together in India's current coaching setup. Even before Rohit took charge as the national side's captain, the two had already shared a dressing room. Gambhir, an established senior player at that time, provided Rohit with a familiar face in the team. This history made their later coach-captain equation different from a conventional one, as Gambhir did not need to build their relationship from scratch when he became coach.

Reflecting on the four India captains he has worked with during his coaching tenure, Gambhir explained that they all shared a common intention of prioritizing Indian cricket.
