Vladimir Guerrero Jr. doubles down on controversial contract comments

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Vladimir Guerrero Jr. sparked controversy with comments about his $500 million contract with the team. During a Spanish language interview, Guerrero explained that he doesn't get paid to hit 40 home runs every year, as he is being rewarded for his past accomplishments. He has only hit nine home runs in 142 games this season, the same amount he hit in 60 games during the COVID-shortened 2020 season.

Guerrero signed the 14-year, $500 million contract ahead of the 2025 season. Despite hitting 23 home runs last year and eight in the postseason, last year's ALCS MVP, he defended his comments, stating they reflect his personal opinion about being paid for past performance. While he may be right about the contract structure, fans are unlikely to forgive him for struggling if his performance continues to decline in the 2030s.
