US rejects pleas from OpenAI, Anthropic for global AI standards

The CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Hugging Face have urged the United Nations that the rapid pace of artificial intelligence (AI) development and its potential societal risks necessitate global coordination. These concerns were echoed by Dario Amodei of Anthropic and Clement Delangue of Hugging Face. OpenAI's Sam Altman had previously called for standardized risk evaluation metrics and the establishment of AI safeguards, emphasizing that "national and international" standards are crucial for measuring AI capabilities and ensuring human oversight.

However, Michael Kratsios, a key advisor to US President Donald Trump, dismissed the need for new AI regulations, asserting that the technology's rapid advancement and competitive advantage for the US should not be curtailed. This stance aligns with President Trump's desire to maintain America's leadership in AI, a sector he views as vital for national competitiveness.

The CEOs argued for a collaborative approach to AI governance, with Altman specifically advocating for the creation of global standards for risk assessment, incident reporting, and classification to prevent potential catastrophic failures. Anthropic's Amodei stressed the need for "even more stringent safety standards" as AI develops, while Delangue of Hugging Face called for stronger monitoring and reporting protocols.

All three are US-based executives deeply involved in AI technology development, with Hugging Face recently falling victim to an AI-driven hack, which has sparked industry-wide concerns about AI's capabilities and potential misuse.
