US judge orders White House reinstate access to CNN, MS NOW and Politico

A US federal judge has ruled that the Trump administration must immediately restore access for CNN, MS NOW, and Politico to the White House. The ban was imposed by President Donald Trump on Friday, after the outlets published what he referred to as "fake news" and "fiction and lies." The news organizations filed a joint lawsuit seeking a temporary restraining order against the ban, arguing that it violated the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of the press.

Judge Timothy Kelly agreed, stating that the revocation of press passes likely infringed on the journalists' constitutional due process rights. According to the ruling, individuals generally must be given notice and an opportunity to be heard before the government takes away their constitutionally protected interests. The White House ban arises during a period of low approval ratings for the former reality TV star, as well as a risk for his Republican Party of losing control of Congress in the upcoming midterm elections and the ongoing US-Iran war.
