Unlocking of Blue Economy potential: CNS for translating maritime policies into practical action

ISLAMABAD - Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf has urged the conversion of maritime policies and international commitments into tangible measures to unleash Pakistan's Blue Economy potential. In his message commemorating World Maritime Day 2026, observed on September 24 under the theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence,” the Naval Chief underscored the strategic and economic importance of Pakistan's maritime domain.

He reaffirmed the Pakistan Navy's dedication to protecting national maritime interests and stressed that maritime security, environmental conservation, and institutional cooperation are pivotal for sustainable economic expansion.

Admiral Ashraf highlighted that Pakistan's coastline and Exclusive Economic Zone present ample prospects for growth through maritime channels, shipbuilding, recycling, fisheries, offshore resources, energy, and tourism. Nonetheless, harnessing this potential necessitates a secure, stable, and sustainable maritime setting, efficient institutional oversight, responsible practices, and ongoing investment in maritime capabilities.

He stressed that this year's theme accentuates the necessity of converting maritime policies, regulations, and international commitments into concrete action. For Pakistan, this entails enhancing maritime safety, safeguarding the marine environment, augmenting professional expertise, and ensuring adherence to international standards.

Emphasizing the Pakistan Navy's role, the Naval Chief pointed out that persistent monitoring of maritime areas, protection of sea lines of communication, and contributions to regional security foster an atmosphere favorable to maritime trade and economic pursuits. He reiterated Pakistan Navy's commitment to maintaining a secure and stable maritime environment through collaboration with national maritime stakeholders and international allies.

He called for a collective approach to maritime development, stressing the importance of heightened maritime awareness, responsible marine resource utilization, and stronger ties among government entities, industry, academia, and coastal communities. The Naval Chief affirmed Pakistan Navy's support for national endeavors towards sustainable maritime development and the fulfillment of national and global commitments.

He also reaffirmed the Navy's dedication to the International Maritime Organization's vision of safer, secure, and environmentally sustainable seas.

Conveying felicitations to Pakistan's maritime community and the global maritime community, Admiral Ashraf acknowledged the contributions of seafarers, maritime professionals, fishermen, and coastal communities to maritime connectivity, national prosperity, and economic growth.
