UN-Vollversammlung: EU kündigt Widerstand gegen Trumps Gerichtsvorstoß an

The European Union has announced its opposition to US President Donald Trump's attempt to dissolve the International Criminal Court (ICC). Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Rats President António Costa pledged to defend the institution. Threats and attacks against the ICC, its officials, and employees are unacceptable.

In a previous UN address, Trump called on member states to withdraw from the ICC, stating, "I call on all states that are members of the International Criminal Court to immediately withdraw from this scandalous institution." This conflict once again escalated the dispute surrounding the court, which currently has 125 states as treaty parties and prosecutes the most serious crimes such as genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

However, the USA, Israel, Russia, and around Turkey do not recognize the ICC. Costa emphasized that defending international law is a duty. The USA accuses the ICC of acting politically and even imposes sanctions on it and its representatives. The court recently made headlines primarily due to an arrest warrant issued for Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The International Criminal Court (ICC), as opposed to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which is also located in The Hague, Netherlands, deals with disputes between states and is the highest court within the UN system. Costa addressed the General Assembly in New York, stating, "Defending international law is not an option, but our responsibility."

The issue of accountability should not depend on political expediency, and under international law, one should not use double standards.
