Trump and Xi hold critical talks at White House summit

On Thursday, Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed US President Donald Trump to the White House for a state visit marked by lavish pomp and circumstance. Despite the formalities, Xi expressed concerns about managing the superpower rivalry between their nations peaceably.

Xi highlighted key red lines China would not cross: the development of artificial intelligence must remain under human control; Taiwan's status must not be recognized as independent; and the Iran conflict should be resolved through negotiation. He urged President Trump to show prudence and avoid instigating conflict over Taiwan and to end the war with Iran promptly.

While the formal discussions yielded few breakthroughs, the visit served as a platform for both leaders to manage their growing disagreements. The ceremony included a formal welcome on the South Lawn of the White House, a military parade on the Rose Garden, and a flyover by American military jets, including a B-2 bomber.

Xi also showcased his friendship with Trump by joking about the friendly media coverage he receives, a comment that came after Trump banned several news outlets from the White House. The visit culminated with a state dinner for Xi, attended by top US tech CEOs.
