There’s a global plan to save humans from AI. Can it actually work?

The global AI safety landscape has been in development for the past four years, with various national and international efforts aiming to regulate and mitigate potential threats from advanced AI systems. This includes the establishment of AI safety and security institutes, voluntary commitments from companies, government-funded bodies, international reporting mechanisms, and scientific assessments of AI risks.

However, there is still no comprehensive and functioning global system in place to respond to AI crises effectively, particularly when they transcend national borders and involve skeptical countries.

Recent developments, such as the US-China summit and the UN's call for AI regulation, have brought some progress on this issue. President Donald Trump's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, along with the US-led push for AI risk management, may pave the way for a 90-day, opt-in rapid response mechanism. This mechanism could join existing AI safety elements to create a crude but functional first-responder system when AI-related incidents occur.

While this proposed solution isn't perfect, it represents a step forward in addressing the growing concerns about AI safety on a global scale. However, it is crucial to recognize that the creation of such a system will require more than just the involvement of the US and China. Other important AI nations must also participate and commit to a cooperative approach, despite their differences and varying AI safety policies.
