Supreme Court Defers Ulhasnagar Civic Nomination Process, New Deadline Set For September 28

The election process for seven nominated corporator positions within the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) has been postponed due to a decision by the Supreme Court. This postponement came after the UMC Mayor, Ashwini Nikam, and two organizations, who were disqualified as Shiv Sena corporators, petitioned the court to pause the nomination process.

The court granted an extension beyond the initially set deadline of September 25, setting a new deadline for September 28. Given that September 27 is a Sunday, the process will conclude on September 28. The seven positions were previously pending for several months. The UMC had planned a special general body meeting on September 24 to finalize the next stage of the process.

The Supreme Court’s latest ruling has put the scheduled proceedings on hold. The controversy revolves around the disqualification of two Shiv Sena corporators due to the invalidation of their caste certificates. These two individuals have contested their disqualification in the Bombay High Court, arguing that the nomination process should be halted until their petitions are resolved.

However, the Supreme Court did not put the nominated corporator process on hold until those cases were decided; instead, it directed the disqualification petitions to continue before the Bombay High Court.
