SIWES mandatory for NYSC mobilisation, HND admission — FedPoly Bauchi rector

Alhaji Sani Usman, the Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, has announced that the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is mandatory for National Diploma (ND) students preparing for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and those seeking admission into the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme. This requirement was emphasized during a SIWES orientation program held in the institution.

Usman explained that SIWES is essential as it bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing students for the industrial world. He stressed that SIWES is now a compulsory aspect of student training, with students required to provide proof of participation before proceeding to NYSC. Failure to do so may hinder their graduation and admission into HND programs.

The Polytechnic Librarian, Alhaji Yusuf Garba Sintali, represented the Rector and highlighted the significance of SIWES, emphasizing that it bridges the gap between theory and practice. The acting Area Manager of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) in the Bauchi Area Office, Naanzem Yilshuut, echoed Usman's sentiments, stressing that SIWES is designed to equip students with the practical skills necessary for the industrial world.

The ITF official urged students to approach the program with seriousness and a willingness to learn, noting that their conduct during the attachment would reflect on themselves, their families, and the institution. The ITF has taken steps to improve the effectiveness of SIWES, including developing job specifications, strengthening the supervisory role of lecturers, and organizing pre-attachment orientation programs.

The ITF representative, Dr Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun, emphasized that the scheme aims to strengthen the relationship between tertiary institutions and industry, providing employers with insights into training needs and standards. He urged institutions, employers, students, and other stakeholders to collaborate in achieving the objectives of the scheme.

Dr Dauda Ali, the Director of SIWES at the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi, explained that the orientation program is designed to prepare students for their four-month industrial attachment. He stressed that the industrial training is a prerequisite for students seeking admission into the HND program, and urged them to abide by the rules and regulations of their host organizations while protecting the institution's reputation during their training.
