Seven suspects arrested over illegal waste dumping in Lagos

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) apprehended seven individuals suspected of engaging in illegal waste disposal during a nighttime operation in the Pattey area of Lagos Island. The operation, which took place on Wednesday, is part of LAWMA's ongoing crackdown on illegal waste disposal sites and environmental violations in Lagos State.

The arrested suspects, identified as Nafisat Alabi, Aminullah Abdulrasheed, Segun Adeyemi, Gboyega Osuntuyi, Segun Olowe, Adebayo Ibrahim, and Stephen Ogboru, were allegedly targeted for prosecution. The enforcement action faced resistance when a group of suspected hoodlums attempted to interfere with the enforcement officers at LAWMA's field office.

The situation was resolved when a tactical team from the Lion Building Police Station intervened. LAWMA Managing Director Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin stated that the agency will continue its enforcement efforts to curb illegal waste disposal across the state, emphasizing the importance of sustained monitoring and responsible waste practices.

The arrested individuals have been transferred to the Task Force Office in Oshodi for prosecution. Dr Gbadegesin praised the police for their swift response and urged residents to cooperate with LAWMA in maintaining a cleaner environment, while warning against obstructing enforcement officers.
