Santa Barbara Film Fest: John Malkovich Tapped for Performer of the Year Award for ‘Wild Horse Nine’

John Malkovich will be honored with the Outstanding Performer of the Year Award at the upcoming 2027 Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF). This accolade recognizes his outstanding performance in Martin McDonagh’s film "Wild Horse Nine," where he plays a CIA agent alongside Sam Rockwell. The story revolves around the CIA agents as they navigate from Chile to Easter Island prior to the 1973 Chilean coup that ousted President Salvador Allende.

Malkovich's comic portrayal of a man attempting to write a book revealing CIA secrets has positioned him as a leading contender in the race for the prestigious Oscar Best Actor award. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, where Malkovich received the best actor award from a jury featuring Maggie Gyllenhaal. "Wild Horse Nine" also had its theatrical debut on November 6.

Executive Director Roger Durling of SBIFF praised Malkovich's performance, highlighting its emotional depth, versatility, and the commanding nature of his artistry. Malkovich has previously been nominated for Academy Awards for "Places in the Heart" and "In the Line of Fire." His extensive filmography includes appearances in "Dangerous Liaisons," "The Killing Fields," "Burn After Reading," "Con Air," "Shadow of the Vampire," "In the Hand of Dante," and "Being John Malkovich."

The Outstanding Performer of the Year Award has been bestowed upon notable actors such as Michael B. Jordan, Cate Blanchett, Bradley Cooper, Adam Driver, Jennifer Lawrence, and Viola Davis. The award ceremony is scheduled for February 12, 2027, and will take place during the 42nd annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival, which will run from February 3 to February 13 in the coastal city of Santa Barbara, located north of Los Angeles.
