Russia Has Taken Hybrid Attacks In Europe To A New Level — Wadephul

Russian hybrid attacks across Europe have escalated to unprecedented levels, with Moscow putting increasing pressure on nations supporting Ukraine, according to German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, as reported by UATV English. Wadephul cited an attempted drone attack at Leipzig Airport in early August, where Russia allegedly aimed to target two Ukrainian cargo planes.

This incident is not an isolated case, Wadephul emphasized. He warned that Russia's reckless and dangerous escalation in Europe is causing global consequences. The German foreign minister drew a connection between Russia's aggression against Ukraine and issues of global food security. He pointed out that Russian strikes on Ukrainian ports have complicated grain exports, contributing to food shortages and hunger in other parts of the world.

In response to these developments, Wadephul again urged for an immediate and full ceasefire, as well as an exchange of prisoners of war. He called for negotiations conducted in good faith and in accordance with international law, aiming for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace. Wadephul noted that Ukraine is prepared to enter into such negotiations, while Russia continues to refuse them.

His comments come as European countries grow more apprehensive about Russia's use of hybrid tactics, encompassing sabotage, cyberattacks, disinformation, and other forms of pressure aimed at nations backing Ukraine. Ukrainian security expert and reserve Major General Mykola Zentsev previously reported that Russia is constructing infrastructure along NATO's eastern border for a substantial hybrid operation.

This operation, Zentsev suggested, might not necessitate the deployment of hundreds of thousands of troops, as observed before Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The objective of such an operation, according to Zentsev, could be to generate multiple crises concurrently, potentially surpassing NATO's decision-making capacity and compelling European countries to shift resources from supporting Ukraine to their own defense.
