Rolls-Royce signs ‘multi-million’ engine deal

Rolls-Royce has entered into a multi-million pound deal to power nine new Airbus A350-1000 aircraft for Philippine Airlines. The FTSE-100 firm will provide 18 engines for the long-haul jets in a significant agreement that will extend beyond the initial engine supply. Once finalized, the arrangement will also encompass a comprehensive maintenance package, ensuring Rolls-Royce's ongoing support and monitoring of the engines throughout their operational lifespan.

Officials revealed that the deal's true value, described as "hundreds of millions of pounds," has yet to be disclosed.

The government expressed its support for the deal, emphasizing that it would generate "high-quality jobs" at Rolls-Royce's Derby base. The order was initially announced as a memorandum of understanding at the Farnborough International Airshow in July, with Rolls-Royce's president, Rob Watson, highlighting the company's pride in strengthening its long-standing relationship with Philippine Airlines.

Minister for Trade Anas Sarwar praised the news, stating that British engineering is thriving through world-class innovation and positioning UK companies at the forefront of the pack. He further noted that this order would bring good quality jobs to both Derby and Broughton, where Airbus manufactures wings for its commercial aircraft. Sarwar also reaffirmed that UK expertise is integral to thousands of flights operated by one of the fastest-growing airlines globally.

The Trent XWB-97 engine, central to this deal, has the capability to operate on a blend of sustainable aviation fuel, with plans to eventually run on 100% sustainable aviation fuel. This development follows Philippine Airlines' earlier order for nine Trent XWB-97-powered Airbus A350-1000 aircraft in 2023.
