Punjab Police Ordered to Make Much-Needed Change to FIRs

The Lahore High Court has directed the Punjab Police to standardize and improve the readability of First Information Reports (FIRs) throughout the province. Chief Justice Alia Neelum expressed her concerns over the extremely small font size used in the documents, stating that some reports were nearly impossible to read, even with glasses. The issue, she noted, was recurring because extensive information was being forced onto a single page, rather than being spread across three pages as usual.

The court's Chief Justice remarked, "Have you seen the FIR? It cannot be read even with glasses." She went on to say, "They say they are saving paper. While saving paper, our eyes have been ruined." In response to the court's directives, Inspector General of Punjab Police Abdul Karim has been instructed to ensure that all police stations in Punjab adopt a uniform computerized FIR format, complete with a suitable font size.

The court also mandated the preparation and dissemination of a standardized template across the province.

According to the Inspector General, a letter has already been dispatched to the chairman of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) concerning this matter. He informed that the PITB has already provided assistance, allowing FIRs to be enlarged by up to seventy percent. Chief Justice Neelum emphasized the necessity of establishing a standard font for all FIRs, asserting that the implementation should not exceed two days.
