Premier League pushes for £1.8bn EFL funding deal

The Premier League is persistently striving for an agreement with the English Football League (EFL) on a new funding deal worth £1.8bn. The 10-year proposal, which would increase solidarity payments to the 72 EFL clubs by double, was officially presented last week following the approval of the agreement by Premier League clubs in July.

An additional £1.8bn would be provided to EFL clubs, with a portion of the funding coming from an increase in the Premier League’s transfer levy. However, the EFL has yet to endorse the proposal, with ongoing negotiations between the two leagues. The Premier League reiterated its commitment to a football-led solution to ensure additional funds reach the EFL clubs this season.

Should negotiations fail, the Independent Football Regulator could step in and impose a settlement. The proposed deal also includes scrapping the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final and implementing controls to prevent the extra funding from being used to pay player wages. The financial redistribution dispute has persisted for years, primarily centered around parachute payments to clubs relegated from the Premier League.

The EFL contends that these payments distort competition, while the Premier League argues they encourage relegated clubs to invest and maintain the competition's revenue-generating capacity.
