Phillies All-Star Jesús Luzardo confident he can return from shoulder inflammation for playoffs

Philadelphia Phillies left-handed pitcher Jesús Luzardo believes he has recovered sufficiently from left shoulder inflammation to participate in the upcoming playoffs. The Phillies secured their fifth consecutive playoff spot on Thursday following a win against Milwaukee and a loss by either Arizona or San Diego. Luzardo was initially placed on the 15-day injured list on September 15, three days after being absent from a start due to the shoulder issue.

He threw approximately 30 pitches in a bullpen session ahead of Thursday's game and reported that his shoulder feels normal, indicating a positive trend.

Luzardo has had a strong season, going 14-5 with a 2.87 ERA and securing his first All-Star appearance this year. He ranked second in the National League (NL) with 221 strikeouts over 29 starts and achieved his first career complete game during a two-hit shutout against Atlanta on September 7. He could potentially participate in a simulated game before the weekend concludes.

Phillies interim manager Don Mattingly has not ruled out utilizing Luzardo as either a starter or a reliever in an NL Wild Card Series. Luzardo is open to any role the team requires, from a single inning in the bullpen to starting or even performing a non-pitching task like being the bat boy. He expressed his willingness to fulfill any request the team has.

Mattingly commented positively on Luzardo's condition, stating that he feels good and has not displayed any discomfort during bullpen work. The Phillies possess depth in their rotation, which could facilitate a stepwise return for Luzardo through bullpen appearances. Pitchers Zack Wheeler and Cristopher Sánchez are likely to start the first two games, while Aaron Nola, who has had a strong second-half performance, should remain in the rotation.

The team has also not dismissed the possibility of rookie Andrew Painter contributing to the rotation, with Painter scheduled to start against the Brewers on Thursday. Luzardo's addition to the bullpen could provide a strong finishing touch to the ninth inning.
