Pakistan Receives 2nd Qatari LNG Cargo of the Month

Pakistan has received its second liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipment from Qatar this month, with the vessel Shandong Redwood arriving at the PGPL terminal on September 13. This brings the total Qatari LNG cargoes received by Pakistan in September to two, following the first cargo delivered on September 10. Both shipments were facilitated by diplomatic efforts between Pakistani authorities and Iranian counterparts to ensure a smooth passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The latest LNG cargo, comprising around 81,936 metric tonnes, was secured at a price equivalent to 13.37 per cent of Brent. This additional LNG supply is expected to provide temporary relief to Pakistan's power sector, which has been grappling with several hours of load shedding in various regions due to ongoing gas supply constraints. Pakistan is heavily reliant on imported LNG to meet the demands of its power and industrial sectors.

The Qatari LNG agreement with Pakistan is long-term in nature, and the regular arrivals of LNG cargoes under this arrangement help mitigate potential disruptions in gas supply. However, any prolonged disruption to LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz could lead to higher procurement costs, decreased gas availability, and increased pressure on electricity generation.

Qatar continues to maintain diplomatic engagement with Iran and other regional countries while remaining a significant global LNG supplier. For Pakistan, the timely receipt of the second Qatari LNG cargo offers some respite, but the safe passage of future LNG shipments through the Strait of Hormuz remains crucial for maintaining a stable gas supply to the country's energy infrastructure.
