The affected portal was part of the nation's public health insurance system, Medicare, he informed reporters at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Albanese did not dismiss the possibility of legal consequences for the company, stating, "There will obviously be legal consequences on it," though he cautioned against pre-empting the outcome. The breach occurred amid heightened concerns over AI's potential to undermine digital security, with some fearing the technology could lead to a loss of privacy, financial damage, and even compromise national security.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had recently attempted to portray AI in a more favorable light during a speech to the UN Security Council. Albanese expressed disappointment with the company's delayed notification about the incident and its handling of the communication. OpenAI has not yet commented on the matter, but previously assured ABC that there was no evidence of patient records being accessed.
