Apple is set to unveil a new iPad mini, marking its first update in two years. The upcoming model, tentatively released next month, is expected to bring significant improvements to the device. The most notable change will be the adoption of an OLED display, a marked improvement over the current LCD panel. This shift will provide users with deeper blacks, richer colors, and enhanced contrast.
While the OLED display is a major highlight, the new iPad mini may or may not incorporate ProMotion technology, which would offer refresh rates up to 120Hz. As of now, there's no confirmation on this aspect. The current iPad mini, launched in October 2024, is equipped with the A17 Pro chip. The next-generation iPad mini is anticipated to feature either the A19 Pro or A20 Pro chip, promising a substantial performance boost and the potential to support advanced Siri AI features in iOS 27.
Additionally, Apple is rumored to be testing a "redesigned casing" for the iPad mini, making it water-resistant like the iPhone. This feature could significantly increase the device's durability, particularly for those using it as an e-reader. Furthermore, the iPad mini 8 might introduce a revamped vibration-based speaker system, potentially eliminating speaker holes for a more water-resistant design.
Bloomberg reports that Apple aims to launch the OLED iPad mini as early as October, heralding the "biggest overhaul to the iPad mini in half a decade." The pricing for the new device remains undisclosed. Apple hiked the price of the current iPad mini from $499 to $599 in July, with the price currently discounted to $569 on Amazon. The cost of the OLED iPad mini is yet to be determined.
