NDPHC moves to revive 20-year Akwa Ibom power project

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) is working towards reviving the 330kV Ikot Abasi Transmission Line in Akwa Ibom State, which was awarded nearly two decades ago under the National Integrated Power Projects programme. NDPHC's Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Adighije, revealed this during a recent meeting with Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno.

The main impediment to the project's completion is a series of outstanding community and wayleave issues, which Adighije said cost slightly under N4 billion to resolve. NDPHC has already deployed substantial project materials, such as conductors and tower members, worth millions of dollars, along the project corridor between Adiasim and Ikot Ekpene, but they have been blocked by the ongoing dispute.

The company is optimistic that Governor Eno's intervention as a shareholder and board member will enable the contractor, Anit Energy, to resume work and complete the project before May 29, 2027. NDPHC is committed to supporting Akwa Ibom State's development, particularly with the increased demand for electricity driven by investments in hospitality, commerce, and industry.

NDPHC has also commenced engagement with the Akwa Ibom State Electricity Regulatory Commission to explore ways of unlocking the potential of the assets and extending electricity access to underserved communities.
