Meta's new AI fidget is a ... Tamagotchi?

Meta has recently introduced a new AI handheld device called the Muse Charm, which has sparked comparisons to the nostalgic Tamagotchi toy. This latest addition joins other hardware startups like Humane AI pin and Rabbit’s r1, all attempting to bring agentic AI to a broader audience. The Muse Charm, roughly the size of an Apple Watch, features a teddy bear-shaped avatar that communicates through voice interactions with users.

Meta has a distinct edge over many AI hardware startups, as it has direct control over hardware, software, and models. While the specific models running on the device remain uncertain, it is likely to run voice-to-text and text-to-speech models locally, while avatar responses will be generated by Meta's cloud-based Muse LLMs. The Charm is set to launch around Christmas, reminiscent of the excitement of unboxing a Tamagotchi.

However, its pricing and added value over a standalone app remain unclear. Many consider Meta's handheld device a potential gimmick, similar to Rabbit's r1, which some felt was an overpriced accessory. Meta's advantage lies in its prior experience with physical hardware, which may have shielded it from some of the privacy issues associated with strapping cameras to people's faces.
