Meta takes down a critical video about meta AI Glasses after filming at Meta

Meta unveiled a series of new wearable devices powered by its artificial intelligence models on Wednesday, including an audio-only version of its smart glasses, amid growing privacy concerns. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the lineup at the company's annual Connect conference in Menlo Park. The audio-only glasses, set to ship on October 13 for $349, will complement a range of new smart glasses models that retain the photo and video capabilities.

Meta claims privacy is a top priority with features like a recording indicator light, which Zuckerberg emphasized would remain clear to users. The company has been under scrutiny for the potential misuse of camera-equipped wearables, particularly in instances of filming women and girls without consent. Zuckerberg reiterated Meta's commitment to privacy features, stating they would be emphasized more frequently in the future.

Meta's smart glasses, which first launched in 2021, have since evolved to include display glasses and recently Meta-branded AI glasses, separate from its partnership with eyewear manufacturers. The company also released mixed reality glasses, called Meta VR Glasses, which are expected to launch in spring 2027 for $1,299. These glasses are lighter than previous VR headsets and rely on hand gestures and voice commands for interaction.

Meta's AI-focused app, Muse, has gained significant traction, becoming the top free app in Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Muse allows users to perform tasks like making appointments and making calls using personal account information. Meta is also exploring partnerships with various brands, including Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, and Sephora, to integrate their services into Muse.

However, Meta faces ongoing challenges related to child safety and privacy, including a recent settlement with US states over violations of consumer protection and children's online privacy laws. The company also deals with age-based restrictions and bans in various countries, as well as potential personal injury lawsuits in the US.
