Melania Trump hosts China’s first lady for an outing that is watched for diplomacy and style

Melania Trump and Peng Liyuan, the First Ladies of the United States and China respectively, embarked on a cultural tour of the United States on Thursday. The duo, who were not accompanied by their husbands at the White House, visited the Smithsonian's National Museum of Asian Art in Washington. This public gathering marked a significant diplomatic visit aimed at showcasing cultural ties between the two nations.

The event showcased the First Ladies' ability to blend style and diplomacy, a rare occurrence in nearly a decade since the last public meeting of the spouses. Peng, known for her melodious voice as a renowned soprano, and Melania, a former fashion model, were the center of attention as they entered the museum. Onlookers gathered on the sidewalk, many waving flags of both China and the United States, and some displaying banners with Chinese text.

Inside the museum, the First Ladies visited the Peacock Room, a historically significant gilded green, blue, and gold dining room. Originally located in a London mansion, the room was transferred to the National Museum of Asian Art in Washington in 1923. The room was originally designed by American artist James McNeill Whistler. During their visit, the First Ladies admired the "Princess from the Land of Porcelain," an oil painting by Whistler that currently hangs in the Peacock Room.
