Malaysia, China agree on proposed ECRL extension to Rantau Panjang

Malaysia and China have reached an agreement to extend the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) from Kota Bharu to Rantau Panjang in Kelantan, according to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The project, spanning 665 kilometers, aims to stimulate economic activity in deprived areas of Kelantan and create a direct transport link with Thailand. Anwar stated that further discussions with all stakeholders will precede the proposal being presented to the Cabinet for consideration.

During his visit to China, Anwar also shared positive feedback on the proposal with Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul. The ECRL, a land transport project connecting the west and east coasts of Peninsular Malaysia, will consist of 20 stations, including 10 passenger stations and 10 stations for freight and passenger transport.

The discussion with Chinese Premier Li Qiang was deemed crucial, covering strategic issues for both countries and the Asean region, as well as providing insights for the upcoming meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. Anwar emphasized that Malaysia maintains a neutral stance, continuing direct dialogue with the US, while acknowledging China's awareness of this approach.

In a Facebook post, Anwar expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for providing consular aid to Malaysians affected by recent floods and landslides in Tibet.
