Majority blames drug trafficking crisis on NACOC’s under-resourcing

Majority Leader James Agalga has stated that Ghana anticipates an increase in drug trafficking arrests and prosecutions as law enforcement agencies ramp up efforts to combat the issue. This prediction follows the seizure of nearly 3.9 tonnes of suspected cocaine at the Port of Dunkirk, France, on September 10. The container, which was disguised as containing plastic waste, originated from Ghana and had an estimated street value of €225 million.

Agalga announced several measures aimed at strengthening the country's fight against narcotics, such as improved detection capabilities, increased use of technology, and the establishment of a dedicated court for drug-related cases. He believes these enhancements will lead to more effective detection of drug trafficking activities, resulting in prompt arrests and prosecutions.

Agalga also emphasized the importance of collaboration between Ghanaian and foreign law enforcement agencies in tracking entire trafficking networks, rather than just targeting individual drug couriers. He defended Parliament's role in overseeing matters involving criminal investigations, stating that it is not directly responsible for criminal investigations but can invite relevant agencies to appear before committees to answer questions.

Agalga expressed confidence that these government interventions would lead to significant changes in the fight against drug trafficking before President Mahama completes his term.
