Mahama condemns Gaza carnage, backs Palestine and two-state solution

President John Dramani Mahama addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, September 24, condemning the ongoing conflict in Gaza and advocating for stronger international intervention. He emphasized the need to address the humanitarian consequences of the situation, without employing diplomatic language that may obscure civilian suffering.

Mahama highlighted the plight of the Palestinian people in Gaza, the West Bank, and the occupied territories, questioning the continued loss of lives before the international community demonstrated decisive moral authority.

He specifically referenced the tragic death of five-year-old Hind Rajab and the numerous casualties among children in the conflict, vehemently condemning collective punishment, enforced starvation, and mass displacement as gross violations of international law. Ghana, Mahama asserted, is steadfast in recognizing the State of Palestine and supporting a negotiated Two-State solution, which would enable Israel and Palestine to coexist peacefully and securely with guaranteed borders.

Simultaneously, he condemned all acts of terrorism by Hamas that initiated the conflict, insisting that all parties involved must adhere to international humanitarian law.

Mahama urged for heightened international attention to the war in Sudan and other conflicts worldwide, reinforcing that the same standards of civilian protection, humanitarian access, and accountability should apply across all conflicts. He reiterated that across every conflict, globally—whether in Europe, the Middle East, or Africa—the core standard must remain uniform: respect for sovereign integrity, protection of civilians, ensuring unhindered humanitarian access, and accountability for perpetrators of war crimes.
