KMA plans to convert Adum railway enclave into cargo truck terminal

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) is set to repurpose the deteriorated Adum railway enclave into a cargo truck terminal. This transformation follows the demolition of unauthorized structures along the rail by the assembly. At a recent engagement meeting, KMA's CEO, Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, announced that they have presented project designs to the Ghana Railway Development Authority, which have granted approval.

The KMA is working with the railway authority to select a contractor to commence arrangements for the conversion. The Adum Railway Station, once a significant transport hub connecting the Ashanti region's interior to coastal ports, has become an encroached commercial site.

Boadi also revealed that the KMA will resume construction on the long-stalled Krofrom market project, which was initiated in 2007 under the Kufuor administration. The project was halted due to funding shortages in 2008 and remained abandoned for nearly two decades. With the recent approval of 100 million cedis from the government, KMA is optimistic about completing the market.

The completed Krofrom market will serve as a bus terminal for vehicles commuting to various regions in the north, including Bono, Ahafo, Upper East, Savannah, and other parts of the country.

Mahama's administration had promised to revive construction works at the Krofrom market site following its assumption of office. However, the project faced numerous setbacks, including insufficient funding and abandonment by previous contractors. The KMA's renewed assurance of the project's resumption and completion is a significant step towards stimulating round-the-clock economic activity, wealth creation, and local job growth in the region.

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr. Frank Amoakohene emphasized that the government's policy of establishing multiple markets in various districts aims to eliminate the need for people to leave their municipalities for employment.
