King’s College: Unity colleges resume as staff suspend strike

The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has suspended its strike over the concession of King’s College, Lagos. This development allows the reopening of the 115 Federal Unity Colleges across Nigeria. ASCSN leaders met with the Trade Union Congress, Unity Schools zonal coordinators in Kano to resolve the issue on Tuesday.

They agreed to suspend industrial action for two weeks while a seven-member committee reviews the King’s College concession document. The decision came after two weeks of Unity Colleges being shut down by ASCSN and Parent Teacher Association (PTA), demanding the Federal Government reverse the concession. The colleges were to reopen on September 13, but workers under ASCSN directed members to boycott the resumption.

The union leaders stated that the agreement between labour and the Federal Ministry of Education, along with the King’s College concession document, led to the suspension of the strike. The PTA of the colleges proposed September 27 for students to return, awaiting confirmation from the Federal Ministry of Education.
