Kenya moves to improve training, safety of workers seeking jobs abroad

The National Assembly’s Diaspora and Migrant Workers Committee has voiced concerns over the readiness and training of Kenyans seeking work abroad, stressing the need for improved coordination between government bodies and training institutions. On September 23, 2026, the committee met with the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) to evaluate the pre-departure training framework and spot weaknesses impacting migrant laborers.

Chair Lydia Haika highlighted NITA’s crucial role in certifying, coordinating, and promoting such training, emphasizing the necessity of collaboration among NITA, government agencies, recruitment firms, training centers, and overseas missions. NITA Chair David Musila acknowledged the economic value of migrant workers and pledged to enhance their preparation.

Discussions centered on updating training curricula and standards, and the involvement of industry stakeholders in curriculum design. Committee members also inspected NITA facilities, noting poor conditions and questioning the programs' effectiveness compared to those from universities. Kwale MP Mishi Mboko suggested mobile training centers to reach remote areas lacking permanent facilities, underscoring the government's ongoing efforts to bolster preparation and safeguard Kenyans seeking overseas employment.
