Karate coach's Asian Games verdict: 'They achieved more than I expected'

Nagoya, the national karate coach, R. Sharmendran, expressed surprise at his athletes' exceptional performance at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Malaysia's team emerged victorious with two gold medals and three bronze ones.

Sharmendran's women's under-50kg and under-55kg contenders, C. Shahmalarani and Adeola Fay Robert, secured the gold, while K. Thevendran, H. Sureeya Sankar, and the men's team kata squad—comprised of Aiqal Asmadie, Haznil Henry, and Mukhriz Mazlan—claimed the bronze. For Shahmalarani, this victory was particularly gratifying, as it marked her first win against Uzbekistan's world champion, Gulshan Alimardanova, after losing to her thrice previously.

Despite a close encounter with Hong Kong's Tsang Yee Ting in the final, Shahmalarani triumphed on referee decision after the bout ended 0-0.

The coach lauded his team's feat, stating that he was "very happy" and that they had exceeded his expectations. He elaborated on Shahmalarani's victory, emphasizing the significance of overcoming the Uzbekistan athlete. As for Adeola, Sharmendran expressed optimism about her future, acknowledging her talent, hard work, and humility. He highlighted Adeola's determination, noting that she had quit her studies midway to join the national team and has since resumed her education while continuing her training.

Sharmendran attributed the team's success to a collective effort, crediting the Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) for offering Proton e.MAS cars as incentives for the gold medallists, which he believes provided an extra motivational boost. He also expressed gratitude towards Makaf's president, Datuk Nur Azmi Ahmad, for his support. The coach concluded by hinting at the forthcoming Malaysia SEA Games, where the national karate squad aims to continue its winning streak.
