Justice minister says miscarriage of justice likely occurred in Sask. murder case, orders new appeal

The Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has dismissed allegations that the ongoing detention of Salomey Awiti Baffoe is a deliberate ploy by the government to divert attention from a narcotics trafficking scandal. In an interview on JoyFM’s Top Story, Mr. Tanko Computer stressed that the case must be allowed to proceed through the proper legal channels, emphasizing that the government would not interfere in the judiciary or security agencies' operations.

He argued that the attempts to link the case to the cocaine controversy were an effort to evade accountability under the law.

Mr. Tanko Computer’s remarks came in response to claims made by Second Deputy Minority Whip and Weija-Gbawe MP Jerry Ahmed Shaib, who suggested that the continued detention of Ms. Baffoe was a "facade" meant to divert public attention from narcotics trafficking cases. The High Court denied Baffoe's bail application on Thursday, citing the need for her assistance in ongoing cyber-related investigations and the risk of interference with potential witnesses if she were released. The court subsequently instructed the prosecution to expedite its investigations.

Mr. Tanko Computer affirmed that the NDC would not endorse any attempts to undermine state institutions or the rule of law in the name of political controversy. He reiterated the NDC's commitment to allowing the relevant institutions to fulfill their responsibilities without political interference and vowed that the government would not interfere in the execution of the law.

Furthermore, he defended the NDC's stance on judicial independence, stating that the party would not interfere in the work of the courts, unlike past administrations.
