India to host first cycling world championships in 2032

Cycling's Road World Championships will be held in India for the first time in 2032, the International Cycling Union (UCI) announced yesterday. The decision was made during a congress in Montreal, where Pune, a city of around seven million people located 100 miles from Mumbai, emerged victorious against the Dutch city of Groningen.

Groningen will host the 2034 edition, according to UCI officials. UCI president David Lappartient remarked that the competition between the two cities was very close, but India was ultimately chosen. India is currently preparing to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and has aspirations to host the 2036 Olympics. The championships have primarily taken place in Europe up until now, but the 1974 event in Montreal marked the first time North America hosted the competition. Prior to India, Japan, Doha, and Rwanda were among the countries that have hosted the event.
