In meeting with Pezeshkian, PM Shehbaz stresses implementation of Islamabad MoU

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Thursday, emphasizing the need to carry out the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a 14-point agreement signed between the United States and Iran in June. Pakistan acted as the mediator in the conflict, which has persisted with intermittent strikes and a US naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Iran retains control over traffic through the vital waterway. During the discussion, PM Shehbaz expressed deep concern over the prolonged conflict and stressed the importance of restraint, de-escalation, and sustained diplomatic efforts to attain lasting peace and stability in the region. He also reiterated Pakistan's commitment to continue its sincere and constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability.

Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan's principled diplomacy and efforts for regional peace and security. The two leaders agreed to maintain regular consultations and close coordination to tackle prevailing challenges and capitalize on opportunities, aiming for regional peace, security, and prosperity. Both countries reaffirmed their long-standing ties and the need to strengthen bilateral cooperation across all areas of mutual interest.

This meeting occurred during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, where PM Shehbaz is expected to address the assembly on Friday.
