Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) temporarily took down an apology it had issued regarding the death of student Sahil Wakode before reposting it on X (formerly Twitter). The statement was reinstated on September 24, 2026, just hours after its removal sparked backlash. The institute re-shared the original post from September 21, 2026, expressing regret for the language used in its previous communication about the tragic incident involving Wakode.

The apology noted that the details surrounding Wakode's death were still under investigation, and the institute had initially deemed it inappropriate to comment on those specifics. However, the reason behind the sudden deletion of the apology remains undisclosed. Wakode's passing has ignited protests and calls for a thorough investigation.

His family has accused certain staff members of harassment and caste discrimination, allegations which are currently under scrutiny. Questions have also been raised about the CCTV footage from the examination hall, which featured Wakode and Professor Suryanarayana Doolla. The footage and events leading up to Wakode's demise are now under the purview of the investigators, who are tasked with establishing the facts.
