Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope likened the journey of "S.W.A.T.," the long-running procedural series, to a classic Hollywood story. The show, which starred Shemar Moore as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, defied cancellation attempts twice by CBS before reaching its final season in May 2025. When CBS decided to stop producing "S.W.A.T." after eight seasons, Sony, which co-produced the show with CBS Studios, seized the opportunity to greenlight a spinoff series titled "S.W.A.T.

Exiles." This decision was made without a distributor attached, allowing Sony to take full control of production and avoid the costly process of dismantling and rebuilding sets for potential future distribution. The success of "S.W.A.T. Exiles," which ultimately found a home at Starz, marked a new model for Sony Pictures TV in self-financing projects, potentially opening up new avenues for studios to secure green lights for their own productions.

Pope emphasized the importance of time in production efficiency, stating that the traditional timelines for greenlighting and developing new shows were often too long. Shemar Moore, who took on the lead role in "S.W.A.T. Exiles," expressed his enthusiasm for the project, noting the team's commitment to honoring the original series while introducing a grittier tone and more serialized storytelling.
