‘Heritage, culture, sports must be recognised as economic industries’

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie addressed the national Heritage Day celebration in Oudtshoorn, emphasizing that heritage, culture, and sport should be recognized as significant economic industries. He argued that these sectors possess the potential to generate employment and revenue, deviating from the traditional perception of them merely as forms of entertainment.

McKenzie asserted that a past government oversight was in considering these industries as solely recreational, rather than exploring the commercial aspects they entail.

McKenzie highlighted that the government is shifting its focus towards discovering employment opportunities, especially for the youth, within these industries. He contended that by viewing heritage, culture, and sport as businesses, the nation can tap into untapped potential for job creation and revenue generation. To illustrate his point, he referenced Oudtshoorn, a town rich in minerals, history, and caves, yet lacking in economic progress.

McKenzie contended that while Oudtshoorn is not currently thriving, it is not in the same state as it once was.

He concluded by emphasizing that recognizing these industries as economic powerhouses can significantly enhance the country's revenue streams.
