Grifols says plasma donor safety was not compromised as it works to regain licence

Grifols, a for-profit company overseeing plasma collection, is working with Health Canada to reopen a clinic in Winnipeg after the federal health agency suspended its operating licence due to compliance issues. The clinic, located at Taylor Avenue, faced suspension following reports of two plasma donors dying after donations at separate Winnipeg locations.

Health Canada's investigation found no link between the deaths and the collection process, and Grifols maintains that donor and patient safety was never compromised. Despite owning the clinic, Grifols was limited in its ability to control operations at the centre. The company has since conducted a review, including retraining staff and strengthening procedures and quality systems.

Grifols stated it will continue working closely with Health Canada to demonstrate the effectiveness of these measures and support ongoing compliance at the Taylor Avenue location and all its centres.
