This shift, combined with Meta's proprietary AI assistant, has redirected social media users towards sterile chatbot summaries, often inaccurately portraying important details. This phenomenon has contributed to a 25% decrease in direct traffic to top media sites over the past two years, as 40% of desktop visitors no longer navigate web pages, directly impacting revenue streams for ad or subscription-dependent sites.

Though AI chatbot referrals have grown, they remain insignificant compared to the dwindling number of referrals from traditional search engines. Independent news sites are succumbing to the traffic crunch, opening the door for AI content mills like Brown Brothers Media, which acquire defunct media properties, repurposing them into AI-driven content generators.

The ramifications of this trend are alarming, as these mills amass millions of views through dubious means, creating a future where SEO-optimized AI-generated content reigns supreme, eclipsing reputable journalism.
