Google Gearing Up to Launch Experimental “Data Center” Into Space Next Week

Google is preparing to launch a small satellite with the computing power of a single server into space next week, as part of its Project Suncatcher. The company hopes to harness the constant sunlight in orbit to power AI data centers, avoiding the negative environmental impact of data centers on Earth. However, there are numerous technical and logistical challenges to overcome before such a venture becomes feasible.

These include dealing with space debris, radiation, and the difficulty of maintaining satellites in orbit. Google's senior vice president for research, James Manyika, compared the development process to that of driverless cars, which took the company 15 years to perfect. The tech giant plans to launch as many as 80 satellites in close formation by the mid-2030s, but for now, they are only able to operate the first experimental satellite for 15 minutes at a time.

While Google aims to spend as much on orbital data centers as terrestrial ones by the mid-2030s, experts warn that such massive constellations could have significant ecological consequences, releasing atmospheric pollution and risking damage to the ozone layer.
