Ghana can compete despite setbacks -Queiroz

Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz remains optimistic about his team's prospects, despite setbacks such as injuries and player availability concerns ahead of crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Ghana, the four-time African champions, face Côte d’Ivoire in Bouake on September 7, 2026, followed by a home game against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium on September 29, 2026. Additionally, they will play an international friendly match against Morocco during this period.

Several key players, including Nathaniel Adjei, Jan Gyamerah, and Prince Kwabena Adu, are unavailable due to injuries, while Mohammed Kudus, who recently recovered from an injury, has withdrawn from the squad. In response to these challenges, Queiroz has made new additions to the team, such as Jonas Adjetey, Alidu Seidu, Brandon Thomas-Asante, Mohammed Fuseini, Rahim Ibrahim, and Ebenezer Annan.

During a press conference in Accra, Queiroz compared his team's difficulties to a boat navigating through rough waters but expressed confidence in his squad's ability to compete. He emphasized that the team has a few "holes" to fill but remains strong in its pursuit of success. However, Queiroz expressed concerns over player availability, stating that frequent changes to the squad have hindered efforts to build continuity within the national team.

He stressed the importance of finding a way to build the team around a core group of players, with availability, commitment, and accountability being key factors for success.

Queiroz also highlighted the need for long-term success beyond just results on the pitch, arguing that investment in player development, youth education, facilities, infrastructure, logistics, and medical capabilities is just as crucial as winning matches. He dismissed suggestions that style should take precedence over results, maintaining that his football philosophy is focused on the winning style. Queiroz firmly believes that winning determines the style, and success is the only measure of a good approach.
