Former suburban Melbourne mayor jailed for sexually assaulting teenager

Former Moonee Valley councillor, Cameron Nation, has been sentenced to three months in jail for sexually assaulting a 17-year-old boy in December 2019. Nation pleaded guilty to the crime, during which he invited the intoxicated teenager to his home, supplied him with nitrous oxide and performed a sex act on the vulnerable and disoriented teen.

The court heard that the complainant felt helpless and overwhelmed during the assault, with Nation responsible for his lack of control over the situation. In addition to his jail term, Magistrate Michelle Mykytowycz ordered Nation to complete an 18-month community corrections order and attend drug, mental health and sex offender programs.

Nation's defence team plans to appeal the sentence and seek bail next week. The suppression order, initially placed to protect Nation's mental health, was lifted on Thursday, allowing media to report his name in connection with the case. Nation was recently hospitalised after attempting suicide and is currently supported by family and receiving professional help.
