Fervo brings the first, next-gen geothermal power to the grid to satiate the AI boom

Fervo Energy, a Houston-based startup, has successfully launched the first utility-scale next-generation geothermal power plant, Cape Station, in Utah, according to a press release. This marks a significant milestone in the quest to meet the soaring demand for electricity driven by the AI revolution and other emerging technologies.

Traditional geothermal power, which has been around for over a century, relies on naturally occurring heat sources. In contrast, Fervo Energy's Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) utilizes modern drilling and fracking techniques to create reservoirs in areas lacking naturally occurring heat sources. Fervo, which went public in May with the largest clean-energy IPO ever, claims its innovative technology can power up to 70,000 homes with a 100-megawatt plant, consisting of three 33-megawatt "GeoBlocks."

The first phase of Cape Station, which went online this year, represents the first time a geothermal development has achieved the first power milestone globally. With an additional 400 megawatts under construction, Fervo aims to expand Cape Station to a 900-megawatt complex, demonstrating the commercial and technical maturity of EGS as a reliable, clean power generation technology.
