Federal judge restores access for three barred outlets

A federal judge has temporarily reinstated access for journalists from CNN, MSNBC, and Politico to the White House, after President Donald Trump barred the three news organizations. US District Judge Timothy J. Kelly issued a restraining order on Thursday, directing senior administration officials to restore the outlets' credentials.

The order blocks enforcement of the ban for 14 days, while the organizations pursue their constitutional challenge. Judge Kelly found the administration's ban likely unconstitutional, stating the record did not support the assertion that revoking the passes was necessary to protect national security. The judge noted the White House had not provided proper notice and an opportunity for the journalists to respond before the suspension of their press access.

CNN, MSNBC, and Politico sued after their journalists were denied entry and had their credentials taken following Trump's September 18 announcement. The groups alleged violations of the First Amendment and the Fifth Amendment's due process guarantee. The Justice Department defended the action, arguing that access to the White House is a privilege, not a constitutional right, and that the president has the authority to restrict entry.

Judge Kelly rejected the government's contention that restoring the credentials would endanger national security, citing a lack of factual support for such a risk.
