Eighty countries call for restoration of maritime navigation in Arabian Gulf

Eighty nations have urged the restoration of unrestricted maritime navigation in the Arabian Gulf, expressing concern that Iran's restrictions and Houthi rebel attacks are endangering global trade and regional stability. Bahrain's Foreign Minister, Abdullatif Al Zayani, read a joint statement to reporters at the UN General Assembly, calling for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and safe passage of vessels without tolls or charges.

The statement emphasized that Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz continue to threaten international security and navigational rights. The coalition, comprising Gulf Arab states and major western powers, also denounced Iran's attacks on regional countries and disruptions to international trade and energy supplies. A recent attack on a commercial vessel off Oman resulted in the death of an Indian crew member, while six ballistic missiles launched by Houthi rebels towards Saudi Arabia were reportedly intercepted.

Saudi authorities claimed responsibility for intercepting the missiles, but the Houthis have not yet confirmed responsibility. The coalition warned that Houthi advances towards the Bab Al Mandeb strait, another crucial shipping chokepoint, could further disrupt global maritime trade. Prince Faisal bin Farhan of Saudi Arabia stated that Yemen's internationally recognized government is capable of defending its territory, but preserving the country's unity remains the top priority.

The Saudi-led coalition pledged to support Yemen in maintaining control over all territories, emphasizing that the responsibility to address the threat lies with the international community.
